How to Make Homemade Electrolytes

My husband works in a school. My children play on playgrounds with loads of toddler friends. My baby crawls on the floor and tries to taste-test everything within reach.

Suffice it to say that we have our fair share of stomach issues.

Oftentimes, I have wondered how to replenish my children’s fluids after a bout with a stomach bug. Gatorade and sports drinks do not hold a lot of appeal–especially when I consider their ingredients. But how could I convince my five-year-old to down a whole glass of juicy salt water?

Lemon Juice Electrolyte Gummies

Homemade electrolyte gummies deliver all the goodness of electrolytes without the gunk: no refined sugars, no food dyes, no additives.

Yes, they require mom or dad to stand by the stove for a few minutes. But just five minutes and then they’re done.

So simple.

Why Are Electrolyte Gummies Good For You?

This recipe for homemade gummies with electrolytes is particularly good because it includes a montage of hydrating ingredients:

  • Coconut water
  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Sea salt (or Himalayan pink salt)

And through grass-fed gelatin, it also provides a good measure of protein.

Ingredients for Homemade Lemon Juice Electrolyte Gummies

Skip the sports drinks and make your own homemade electrolyte gummies with these ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice (1 lemon)
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 1 tsp. Himalayan pink salt (or sea salt)
  • 8 Tbsp. raw honey
  • 3 Tbsp. grass-fed gelatin powder

How to Make Lemonade Gummies with Electrolytes

The process for making homemade electrolyte gummies is simple:

  1. In a small saucepan, combine lemon juice, coconut water, and Himalayan pink salt.
  2. Heat over medium heat just until the mixture is warm to the touch.
  3. Remove from the heat. Stir in the raw honey until dissolved.
  4. Slowly sprinkle the grass-fed gelatin powder over the top of the lemon-coconut water mixture, stirring constantly with a whisk to prevent clumping. Stir until smooth.
  5. Using a dropper (we used an old medicine dropper!), pour/drop the liquid-state gummmies into a gelatin mold. (Alternatively, use a mini muffin pan.) Work quickly to get all the gummies made before the gelatin begins to set.
  6. Place the gelatin mold in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.
  7. Remove the gelatin mold from the refrigerator and remove the gummies from the mold. Store gummies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Notes

I love making these gummies in fun shapes to cheer up my kids after they've been down for a few days with a stomach bug. However, fun shapes aren't necessary for the recipe to work its magic. If you do not have a gelatin mold, a mini muffin pan will do--and will actually simplify the process. We love our structured silicone muffin pan from Trudeau.
