Healthy Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough You Can Eat Raw

Licking fingers and spatulas and mixing bowls after mom makes a batch of cookies is one of the quintessential childhood memories.

As a child, the health risks of eating raw cookie dough weren’t glaringly apparent to me. And even now, I often taste-test cookie dough to make sure it will turn out ok.

However, the high sugar content of chocolate chip cookie dough is now something that I can’t ignore.

Sugar-Free Edible Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

My own children now love to test cookie dough for me. As a mom, I sometimes cringe inside when I think of the possible risks of the raw flour and raw egg in the dough.

Thankfully, I’ve found a way to let us all indulge in the best flavors of chocolate chip cookie dough without the sugar, raw egg, or raw flour.

This recipe for Healthy High-Protein Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough makes right everything I once saw as wrong in normal cookie dough.

High-Protein Edible Cookie Dough

Another problem I see with normal cookie dough is its lack of any substantial nutrients. One easy adjustment that I made to change this was to add sources of protein.

  • Peanut Butter – “Nuts are a good source of protein,” according to the Mayo Clinic.
  • Protein Powder – The obviously easy way to incorporate more protein in any recipe is with protein powder. Our favorite type is Mt. Capra Unsweetened Grass-Fed Goat Whey Protein Powder.
  • Greek Yogurt – According to HealthLine, “[a] 7-ounce (200-gram) serving of Greek yogurt provides 20 grams of protein, which makes it a high protein food.”
  • Oat Flour or Almond Flour – These two flours contain protein. Almond flour has a slightly higher protein content (source), but both are great choices and yield similar results in this recipe.

How to Store This Healthy Edible Cookie Dough Recipe

This yogurt is best eaten immediately or within a few hours. However, it will keep in the fridge for a day or two. If you wish to keep it longer, put it in an airtight freezer-safe container and freeze it.

Adjustments and Variations to This Recipe

Natural Sweetener: Honey is another natural sweetener option for this recipe. Maple syrup is our personal preference because of the extra flavor it lends to the cookie dough yogurt, whereas honey gives a high level of sweetness.

Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free oat flour or replace it entirely with almond flour or coconut flour.

Frozen Yogurt: Try making this recipe and then keeping it in the freezer for a few hours. Then eat as a yummy frozen yogurt!

Nut Butter: We use peanut butter in this high-protein chocolate chip cookie dough recipe because we love the flavor. However, feel free to substitute your favorite nut butter (cashew butter, macadamia nut butter, almond butter, etc.).

Dairy-Free: Use a coconut Greek yogurt as the base for this recipe instead of the traditional Greek yogurt.
