This delicious Frozen Berry Chia Seed Jam requires no sugar and tastes extra-fresh. Use it in yogurt, on bread, on Gouda cheese–however you would use regular jam!

A Healthy Sugar-Free Jam

Fruit jam normally requires a boatload of refined sugar to give it its texture, taste, and shelf stability.

However, this huge amount of sugar is not necessary to make a delicious jam.

Why? Because chia seeds and honey can healthfully replace all of that junk. (And still make you want to eat it by the spoonful!)

Why Use Chia Seeds to Make Jam?

When mixed with water, chia seeds produce a natural gelatin–a perfect substance for making fruit jam.

Chia seeds are also a good choice for your body. “They are the richest plant source of omega-3 fatty acids. Chia seeds are a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids that cannot be made by the body” (source).

According to Harvard Health Publishing, some of the numerous benefits of chia seeds include:

  • reducing blood pressure
  • lowering cholesterol levels
  • supporting digestive health
  • aiding in weight management
  • reducing inflammation
  • helping to control diabetes
  • protecting against chronic disease
  • improving anxiety and depression.

This Frozen Berry Chia Seed Jam recipe calls for 2 tablespoons of chia seeds. Just 2 tablespoons provides (on average):

Ingredients for Frozen Berry Chia Seed Jam

  • 2 cups frozen mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, mulberries, cranberries, etc.)
  • 3-5 Tbsp. raw honey (according to taste preference)
  • 1 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice (about 1/2 of a lemon)
  • 1 cup coconut water (or filtered water)
  • 2 Tbsp. chia seeds

How to Make Healthy Chia Seed Jam

  1. In a medium-sized saucepan, cook the frozen berries, lemon juice, and honey over low heat until the berries begin to disintegrate, stirring and mashing the berries often.
  2. Add the coconut water or filtered water and heat for 2 minutes.
  3. Remove from the heat. Stir in the chia seeds and mix until fully incorporated.
  4. Let cool slightly.
  5. Pour into a glass jar and place in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes to thicken.

How to Use Chia Seed Jam

Use this chia seed jam just like you would use any regular jam! Here are a few of our favorites:

  • On yogurt (in a yogurt bowl)
  • On bread or toast
  • On crackers with Gouda cheese

How to Store Chia Seed Jam

Keep in an airtight glass jar in the refrigerator for up to a week. If you need to store this chia seed jam for a longer period of time, freeze it in a freezer-safe container, leaving enough space for liquid expansion. Store for up to 3 months.

Can You Freeze Chia Seed Jam?

Yes! Just like regular jam, chia seed jam is freezer-friendly. Simply put it in an airtight freezer-safe container (preferably glass), leaving extra room inside the container for liquid expansion. Keep it in the freezer for up to 3 months.
