A Healthy Frozen Summer Treat

Summer days beg us to pull out ice cream, iced tea, and popsicles.

If you (like me) are searching for healthier alternatives to sugar-laden frozen treats, then this Easy 2-Ingredient Sugar-Free Watermelon Slushie may be exactly what you are looking for.

A friend first introduced our family to this healthy summer drink when she served us dinner one evening. We were blown away that such deliciousness was the result of just two simple ingredients.

I played around with my friend’s recipe a bit, tweaking here and there, and this recipe for a healthy real fruit slushie was birthed.

Healthy Real Fruit Slushie Recipe

Slushies are a natural frozen summer favorite–right up there with shaved ice and almost (though not quite) as delightful as ice cream.

The problem (at least in my book) is the ingredients present in normal slushies. I’m not a fan of refined sugar, food dyes, or artificial flavors.

Thankfully, making slushies with real fruit is not difficult.

And it is so much better–both in flavor and in ingredients.

Tips and Tricks for Making This Easy Watermelon Slushie with Frozen Watermelon Recipe Even Easier

Tip #1: Keep frozen watermelon chunks on hand in your freezer throughout the summer. Then you will be able to whip up this easy frozen summer snack anytime, without needing to plan a day ahead.

In our family, when we have a bit of watermelon left after a meal, I like to freeze it immediately. I’ve learned that leftover watermelon doesn’t do so well in our house, and not taking care of it immediately means that it will likely end up in the trash.

Tip #2: Add the lemon zest gradually.

Every watermelon’s flavor profile is different. Some are more ripe than others, others are sweeter…The amount of lemon zest needed can vary widely, as a result.

To prevent making this healthy real fruit slushie recipe too sour, add the lemon zest a teaspoon or so at a time, tasting between additions of more zest until you reach your preferred flavor.

Tip #3: Add filtered water.

If your blender (like ours) is high-powered but not able to handle huge chunks of frozen fruit without working up a sweat, then you can add a small amount of filtered water to give the blender some help.

Tools Needed

You really only need one tool to make this recipe: a blender–preferably a high-powered one that can handle chunks of icy frozen watermelon.

Ingredients for a Watermelon Slushie with Frozen Watermelon

To make this easy watermelon slushy recipe, you will need two key ingredients:

  • 2 cups frozen, cubed watermelon
  • Zest of one organic lemon (about 1 to 1 1/2 Tbsp.)

When blending these ingredients, you may need to add a small amount of filtered water to aid the blender if the mixture is too thick.

How to Make an Easy 2-Ingredient Watermelon Slushie

  1. In a blender, blend all ingredients together on high speed until a slushie mixture. (As needed, add small amounts of filtered water to help the blender with the mixture. Be careful not to add too much water at a time, or the result will be more like juice than a slushie.)
  2. Pour into a cup and drink with a straw.

Recipe Variations and Substitutions

Change things up in this watermelon slushie recipe by trying one (or several) of these ideas:

  • Add other frozen fruit to the blender for a bit more variety. Try pineapple, grapes, strawberries, cherries, raspberries, dragon fruit, blueberries, etc.
  • For a little sweeter take on this slushie, add a tablespoonful of honey.
  • Add coconut water instead of normal water to thin out the consistency.
  • Use a bit of fruit juice.
  • Trade the lemon zest for lime zest.
  • Add a bit of fresh mint leaves.

Storage Instructions

This recipe makes one serving and can be drunk all in one sitting. However, if you are interrupted and need to store your slushie for later, you can safely keep it in the freezer for up to a day.

If you plan to store it for longer than a day, then pour it into an airtight glass container and place in the freezer.

To prepare the slushie for drinking again, simply remove it from the freezer and allow it to thaw for about 15-20 minutes at room temperature.

Then, using a fork or spoon, break up the ice. Pour the drink into the blender and blitz until it is again a slushie consistency.

Can You Make a Watermelon Slushie with Frozen Watermelon Ahead of Time?

I do not recommend doing this. Slushies are almost 100% texture and consistency reliant. Much firmer, and they are sorbet. Much softer, and they turn to juice.

This recipe takes a total of two minutes (or less!) to whip up, making it ultra-easy to prepare immediately before serving.
